The holding of our library is very rich in rare books; we own more than two thousand books that were published before 1900. Besides safe storage, the need for availability occurred years ago. So we decided to make these books available for the patrons for the purpose of research.

To achive this target, we created the Collection of Rare Books. Besides the treasures of the universal culture of the book, we wanted to keep the publications published by the first press in Miskolc, the newspapers published by the university press in Kassa and the books printed for the students of the reformed college in Sárospatak in a safe place which is suitable for this collection.  Thanks to the tenders called by the National Culture Found and in the course of salvage we have been doing for years, we have about 100 volumes restored  so far. 

The technical renovation executed between October 2006 and June 2007 created the conditions for developing the Collection of Rare Books.  We managed to enlarge the floorplace of the Local and Reagional History Department by 53 m² with the intention of creating the Collection of Rare Books here.  For the sake of safe storage and comfortable research environment, we purchased appropriate and stylish furniture. The neat furniture needed a flooring that match so we applied a colour matching one. This way we created a nice and cosy room, which our patrons came to like soon. 

The Collection of Rare Books, as well as the Collection of Local and Regional History, can be used on the spot. The rare books may not be photocopied and to mark them, you may only use a pencil, not a pen. Please do not use a flash when taking pictures of the pages.
